Making Music Inspired By NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR

Hey everyone, Stephen back again. In the last video I announced my ongoing project for this channel. I’m going to be creating music inspired by Science Fiction books.

I’m now going to reveal the first book for this project – although I’m pretty sure it’s painfully obvious if you’ve either read this video’s title or seen the thumbnail. The book is Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.

What’s it About?

Published in 1949, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel set in the future where society is controlled and monitored by its glorious omnipotent leader, Big Brother.

The Story follows Winston Smith, a rebel who begins to challenge order by questioning his place in society and committing the unspeakable act of falling in love.

What 1984?

I’ve chosen this book to be the first one to make music inspired by for a couple of reasons.

When I came up with the idea for this project, Nineteen Eighty-Four immediately sprang to mind. Since I first read it many years ago, it’s had a lasting impact on me.

It was a good excuse to delve back in and see if it still had that same impression on me as an adult.

The second reason is that I thought it would be a good book for others to jump aboard with.

If you look up most ‘top 100 books’ lists, it’s bound to be there so I’m guessing it’s most likely ended up on a lot of people’s ‘to read’ lists.

Well, it’s as good a time as any to jump on and have a go!

Read Along With Me

Unfortunately, due to the global crisis we’re all facing at the moment, libraries aren’t really an option to pick up a copy so hopefully the internet can offer a suitable alternative. Here’s a link to the paperback, kindle and audiobook versions on Amazon.

Anyway, whether you’re new to reading it or not, I do hope you join me in reading Nineteen Eighty-Four. I’m really looking forward to delving in and thinking about how I’m going to make music for it.

The initial process will most likely start with just reading the book and then jumping back in to dissect, make notes, pull out themes and see where we go from there.

As it will no doubt take quite a while until any music actually surfaces, expect more video content on the channel all about Nineteen Eighty-Four. So, do subscribe to join me on this journey!
