Thoughts on Eurovision 2017

For the first time in what seemed like decades, I actually sat down to watch this years Eurovision Song Contest. I’m not really sure why, I just thought hey it’s music related and I care about music.

I started off with best intentions to be as positive as can be, live tweet only the things I liked from each countries offerings but I’m sorry to say that lasted for about 3 tweets.

Even the songs I routed for were flawed. The UKs Lucie Jones had the pipes, just not the song and that was the general rule of pretty much anything that stood out. That didn’t stop the grandiose stage effects and god-like mentalities that led me to tweet how I wished Jarvis Cocker would turn up to relive his infamous Brit Award moment – AND GUESS WHAT somebody did just that later on.

Portugal winning was an interesting one. The song was different than anything else in that it was a sort of a  La La Land-escue ballad with a no thrills approach. I didn’t really care for it but at least it actually felt like ‘a song’. It was also interesting what its performer, Salvador Sobral, had to say after winning, basically speaking out against disposable music. I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.

Maybe next year?
